According to recently released government data, the UK Home Office took away licenses of 635 British companies, not allowing them to hire highly skilled foreign workers. People Management obtained the data through the freedom of information request they made to the UK government. The number was 34 percent less than the last year’s total, which was 960 suspensions. However, the number of sponsor licenses revoked during the same period was 610, a 10 percent drop from the previous year. Freedom of information act also revealed that 555 sponsorship licenses were revoked and 455 licenses were revoked between 1 April 2017 and 31 December 2017. Natasha Chell, Laura Devine Solicitors, told that the drop will be because employers are taking their duty seriously and not falling victim to the complex system. The government is now more than concerned about who is granted the license. When the system was introduced, it was simple. Are you a British employer and feel the need to hire foreign employees? But over the past years, it has become about do you really need to hire a foreign employee, about do you really need to hire a foreign employee because the government doesn’t see the need to. UK Home Office decided that as of June 1, 2018, around 29,060 British employers have the license to sponsor foreign workers under the Tier 2 or Tier 5 visa programs. Tier 5 visa is only for foreign-born skilled workers between 18 - 30 years of age who want to work in the country for want to work in the country for up to two years. Approach to migration after Brexit Ahmed Ajina, associate, Seddons, said that decrease in suspension numbers might be because of a change in government’s approach to immigration post-exit from the United Kingdom. To be able to be eligible for the tier 2 visa, non - European Union workers need to get a job that pays them a minimum of £55,000 annually.
