There have always been Roma refugees in Canada, but for the first time in history, their numbers are increasing positively. You might wonder why? According to an immigration expert, it is because of removal of corrupt laws and Trudeau overtaking the government. For Virginia Ivancsik, a Roma refugee, it took almost seven years to get settled in Canada and start a new life.
The seven years marked by multiple visits to the deportation center failed refugee claims, and many trips to Hungary and back home. Even after all that, she loves the people of Canada. Ivancsik and her husband today are an inspiring example, motivating many people to come to Canada and start new lives. In 2013, there were only 21 percent positive claims and rose to 55 percent in 2014. Ever since 2015, when Trudeau became the prime minister of Canada, the numbers have increased consistently. Since then the approval percentage has been well above the 70.
Sean Rehaag, associate professor, Osgoode Hall Law School York University, said that when the political party opposing Rome refugees lose the elections, the incoming party does everything to support them. He said that it was at the same time when corrupt officials who weren’t helping Roma refugees were arrested. There are Roma clients exposed them publicly. These two are the reasons why approval rates of Roma refugees increased. Rehaag performed a survey on 11,000 Roma refugees that made claims between 2008 and 2012 and found that only a nine percent of them were successful.
So why are so many coming to Canada?
Roma refugees are facing workplace discrimination and forced evictions all across Europe, which forced them to go to an immigrant-friendly country like Canada. They can easily claim refugee status but unfortunately weren’t treated well by Canadian lawyers. They are often called as stinky gypsies, but people are changing now.
