On Friday, the Swiss government announced that Switzerland won’t require visas from the citizens of UK who wish to come and stay in the country, even for an extended period.
According to the Swiss government, this exemption of visa will be enforced the day the present Swiss – EU bilateral Agreement on Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) will cease to be effective, after Brexit.
The Swiss executive said the decision to exempt the requirements of a visa for the UK citizens was taken by the Swiss government, before Brexit, in preparation for the outcome of things between the UK and EU after Brexit.
This action corresponds with an expected Acton from the EU, which will exempt the UK citizens from obtaining a visa before entering the Schengen area after Brexit.
Also, it has been confirmed by the UK that after Brexit, they will not also require a visa from a Swiss citizen who would wish to come to the country and stay, be it for a short or long period.
A final sign-off concerning changes to the laws of employment was made by the Swiss government on Friday, to ensure that a different quota of permits will be granted to the Britons who wish to be hired in Switzerland, in case Brexit occurs without a deal.
As such, an additional 3,500 permits have been granted Britons, new to Switzerland, from 30th March to 31st December 2019.
The plan is considered necessary and important, as after Brexit (in case of no deal), the present bilateral Swiss – EU agreement on free movement of persons (AFMP) will not be applicable to Britons.
In other words, the same treatment given to a citizen of a third country will also be accorded to the “new” Britons coming to work in Switzerland after Brexit, as well as the same permit quotas.
A number of critical bilateral agreements crafted to ensure a healthy and peaceful relationship between the UK and Switzerland, in case Brexit occurs without a deal, have been duly signed by both countries. Such includes trade and citizen’s rights agreements.
