According to a recent research conducted by Center for Immigration Studies, the United States’ current immigrants are better educated than ever before but are still behind local Americans when it comes to income, employment, and government dependence. The report was released on April 18, 2018, and asks a very serious question - whether education is enough for immigrants to strive in the United States. Steven Camarota, the author of the report, said that the report suggests that education alone won’t necessarily get you the flow that immigrants won’t. The report studied immigrants who arrived in the United States between the years 2007 and 2017. From 34 percent in 2007, immigrants with a college degree jumped to 49 percent in 2017 which is a good sign for Immigrants. The 15 percent increase a lot more than the 4.6 percent increase seen in local Americans between 25 to 65 years of age. Despite the huge increase, the economic performance of immigrants is not good enough. Immigration participation in labor force reduced from 73 to 67 percent, meaning that immigrants now hold more skilled jobs in the US. Labor participation of local born Americans reduced from 78 to 76 percent. Median income also reduced from $19,125 to $18,402 between 2007 and 2017. At the same time, poverty gap between immigrants and local Americans is drastically increased. New immigrants are twice more likely to live in poverty compared to local born Americans. Use of Medicaid also increased from six to 17 percent as the entry of immigrants has also increased likewise. Better educated outperform than less educated immigrants Camarota said that immigrants with higher education perform better those who aren’t well-educated. He confirmed that college graduates lag behind local American with the same educational credentials. The difference is because of the Great Recession, and it is severely affected immigrants more than the local Americans. Even though they are more educated, they seem to lack some very basic skills.
